BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not only associated with fear but also with other emotions. The present study aimed to examine if changes in shame, guilt, anger, and disgust predicted changes in PTSD symptoms during treatment, while also testing if PTSD symptoms, in turn, predicted changes in these emotions. METHODS: Participants (N = 155) with childhood-related PTSD received a maximum of 12 sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing or imagery rescripting. The data was analyzed using Granger causality models across 12 treatment sessions and 6 assessment sessions (up until one year after the start of treatment). Differences between the two treatments were explored. RESULTS: Across treatment sessions, shame, and disgust showed a reciprocal relationship with PTSD symptoms, while changes in guilt preceded PTSD symptoms. Across assessments, anger was reciprocally related to PTSD, suggesting that anger might play a more important role in the longer term. LIMITATIONS: The individual emotion items were not yet validated, and the CAPS was not administered at all assessments. CONCLUSIONS: These findings partly differ from earlier studies that suggested a unidirectional relationship in which changes in emotions preceded changes in PTSD symptoms during treatment. This is in line with the idea that non-fear emotions do play an important role in the treatment of PTSD and constitute an important focus of treatment and further research.

Most people can conjure images and sounds that they experience in their minds. There are, however, marked individual differences. Some people report that they cannot generate imagined sensory experiences at all (aphantasics) and others report that they have unusually intense imagined experiences (hyper-phantasics). These individual differences have been linked to activity in sensory brain regions, driven by feedback. We would therefore expect imagined experiences to be associated with specific frequencies of oscillatory brain activity, as these can be a hallmark of neural interactions within and across regions of the brain. Replicating a number of other studies, relative to a Resting-State we find that the act of engaging in auditory or in visual imagery is linked to reductions in the power of oscillatory brain activity across a broad range of frequencies, with prominent peaks in the alpha band (8-12 Hz). This oscillatory activity, however, did not predict individual differences in the subjective intensity of imagined experiences. For audio imagery, these were rather predicted by reductions within the theta (6-9 Hz) and gamma (33-38 Hz) bands, and by increases in beta (15-17 Hz) band activity. For visual imagery these were predicted by reductions in lower (14-16 Hz) and upper (29-32 Hz) beta band activity, and by an increase in mid-beta band (24-26 Hz) activity. Our data suggest that there is sufficient ground truth in the subjective reports people use to describe the intensity of their imagined sensory experiences to allow these to be linked to the power of distinct rhythms of brain activity. In future, we hope to combine this approach with better measures of the subjective intensity of imagined sensory experiences to provide a clearer picture of individual differences in the subjective intensity of imagined experiences, and of why these eventuate.

BACKGROUND: Port catheter placement is usually an operation performed under local anesthesia. Being conscious during the interventions performed with local anesthesia can lead to anxiety and stress. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of guided imagery performed before and during the procedure on vital signs and comfort, pain, anxiety, and satisfaction levels in patients with cancer undergoing port catheterization with local anesthesia. METHODS: A total of 80 patients were included in the study. Patients in the intervention group received standard treatment and nursing care, as well as a guided imagery intervention once before and once during the procedure. Patients in the control group received only standard treatment and nursing care. RESULTS: Patients in the guided imagery group reported lower pain and anxiety scores, higher patient satisfaction, and increased comfort compared with patients in the control group. Patients in the guided imagery group showed significantly lower respiratory rate and heart rate than the control group by the end of the procedure. There was no significant difference in blood pressure. CONCLUSION: Practicing guided imagery before and during a procedure performed under local anesthesia reduced cancer patients' pain, increased patient satisfaction and comfort, and had a positive effect on their respiratory and heart rates. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: We recommend guided imagery as a practical, low-cost complementary therapy for patients receiving local anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to examine the effect of guided imagery applied to geriatric orthopaedic patients on preoperative anxiety and comfort. METHODS: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial. The population of the study consisted of geriatric patients treated in the orthopaedics and traumatology clinic of a university hospital. The sample consisted of 80 patients, including the experimental group (n = 40) and the control group (n = 40). Personal Descriptive Form, The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and General Comfort Scale were used as data collection tools. RESULTS: After the guided imagery application, it was determined that the anxiety of the experimental group decreased statistically significantly, and their comfort improved (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: After the imagery, it was determined that the patients in the experimental group had a decrease in their anxiety level and an improvement in their comfort. Since it is a low-cost and easily accessible method, applying imagery in the preoperative period is recommended.

Low decoding accuracy makes brain-computer interface (BCI) control of a robotic arm difficult. Shared control (SC) can overcome limitations of a BCI by leveraging external sensor data and generating commands to assist the user. Our study explored whether reaching targets with a robot end-effector was easier using SC rather than direct control (DC). We simulated a motor imagery BCI using a joystick with noise introduced to explicitly control interface accuracy to be 65% or 79%. Compared to DC, our prediction-based implementation of SC led to a significant reduction in the trajectory length of successful reaches for 4 (3) out of 5 targets using the 65% (79%) accurate interface, with failure rates being equivalent to DC for 2 (1) out of 5 targets. Therefore, this implementation of SC is likely to improve reaching efficiency but at the cost of more failures. Additionally, the NASA Task Load Index results suggest SC reduced user workload.Clinical relevance-Shared control can minimise the impact of BCI decoder errors on robot motion, making robotic arm control using noninvasive BCIs more viable.

OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the effect of guided imagery relaxation through virtual reality on anxiety in women with cervical cancer undergoing radiochemotherapy. METHODS: randomized, non-blinded, single-center clinical trial conducted at a cancer reference hospital. 52 women participated, with randomized allocation of 24 in the control group and 28 in the experimental group (12 sessions of guided imagery relaxation through virtual reality, applied three times a week). The outcome was evaluated using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and statistical analysis was performed using the Generalized Linear Mixed Model. RESULTS: n the experimental group, women presented significant anxiety traits (p=0.010) before the intervention. Between the 4th and 12th week of follow-up, there was a reduction in anxiety levels, without statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: guided imagery relaxation through virtual reality provided evidence of anxiety reduction in women with cervical cancer undergoing radiochemotherapy and may contribute to clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Dermatologists perform a variety of procedures including excisions, biopsies, and other minor surgical procedures. Patients can experience anxiety in anticipation of their surgeries or may develop anxiety during the procedure. Since most dermatologic procedures occur with the patient awake and alert, the physician can offer comforting methods to alleviate some of that anxiety. AIMS: We wanted to provide a review of available methods that dermatologists can use to reduce patient anxiety. MATERIALS & METHODS: In this paper, we review the current literature on methods that can be used in dermatology offices to reduce overall patient anxiety levels. RESULTS: In the preoperative stage, providers can offer educational content to explain the procedure to their patients. Whether it be through telephone calls, educational videos, or utilization of visual models, educating the patient regarding their procedure may reduce their anxiety. Intraoperatively, there are multiple methods that can be used such as music, guided imagery, coloring books, medications, hypnosis, and distraction techniques. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: There is a variety of approaches that can be easily implemented in the office and can help in reducing the anxiety of the patients to allow for a pleasant patient experience and an overall satisfactory procedure outcome.

The primary aim of this randomized controlled trial pilot was to investigate the potential effectiveness of the music psychotherapy method, Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), to assist female patients who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast or gynecologic cancer. A secondary aim was to suggest performance improvements regarding the protocol and the resources required to undertake a future larger scale study. The researchers randomized participants (n = 20) into two groups: Intervention group (n = 10) and Control group (n = 10). The Intervention group received a series of six individual, short GIM sessions whereas the Control group received two verbal counseling sessions that took place at Week 1 and at Week 6 of treatment. All participants in the study completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS-Brief); Cancer Fatigue Scale (CFS); and Herth Hope Index (HHI) before the beginning of Week 1 and again after Week 6 or, in the case of the Intervention group, after the last GIM session. All participants also completed two Visual Analogue Scales (VAS-Hope; VAS-Fatigue) weekly or after each session throughout the duration of the trial. The results of the Intervention group receiving GIM showed medium pre-post effect sizes for the CFS, HHI, and POMS questionnaires, and significant positive changes for the VAS-H and VAS-F questionnaires. As seen from this initial data outcome, a brief series of GIM sessions shows promise to be beneficial for increasing hope, decreasing fatigue, and mitigating distressed mood for female patients undergoing treatment for breast or gynecologic cancer.

Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by widespread persistent musculoskeletal pain. Mostly prevalent among White women, little is known about FMS in other population cohorts. This study examined secondary data of a racially diverse sample of women with FMS that were collected as part of a randomized controlled clinical trial that examined the effect of a complementary therapy intervention over the course of a 10-week guided imagery intervention to identify demographic, social, or economic differences in self-reported pain. Materials and Methods: The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), which measures pain severity and interference, was administered to 72 women (21 Black and 51 Whites) at baseline, 6 and 10 weeks. Student's t tests and time series regression models examined racial difference in pain dimensions and treatment response. Regression models accounted for age, race, income, duration of symptoms, treatment group, pain at baseline, smoking, alcohol use, comorbid conditions, and time. Results: Black women experienced significantly higher pain severity (ß = 5.52, standard deviation [SD] = 2.13) and interference (ß = 5.54, SD = 2.74) than Whites (severity ß = 4.56, SD = 2.08; interference ß = 4.72, SD = 2.76) (interference: t = 1.92, p = 0.05; severity: t = 2.95, p = 0.00). Disparities persisted over time. Controlling for differences in age, income, and previous pain levels, Black women had 0.26 (standard error [SE] = 0.065) higher pain severity and 0.36 (SE = 0.078) higher interference than Whites. Low-income earners also experienced 2.02 (SE = 0.38) and 2.19 (SE = 0.46) higher pain severity and interference, respectively, than other earners. Results were robust to inclusion of comorbidities. Conclusions: Black women and low-income earners experienced significantly higher levels of pain severity and interference and a lower dose response to the intervention. Differentials were robust to inclusion of demographic, health, and behavioral characteristics. Findings suggest that external factors may contribute to pain perception among women with FMS.

Deep learning has been applied to the recognition of motor imagery electroencephalograms (MI-EEG) in brain-computer interface, and the performance results depend on data representation as well as neural network structure. Especially, MI-EEG is so complex with the characteristics of non-stationarity, specific rhythms, and uneven distribution; however, its multidimensional feature information is difficult to be fused and enhanced simultaneously in the existing recognition methods. In this paper, a novel channel importance (NCI) based on time-frequency analysis is proposed to develop an image sequence generation method (NCI-ISG) for enhancing the integrity of data representation and highlighting the contribution inequalities of different channels as well. Each electrode of MI-EEG is converted to a time-frequency spectrum by utilizing short-time Fourier transform; the corresponding part to 8-30 Hz is combined with random forest algorithm for computing NCI; and it is further divided into three sub-images covered by α (8-13 Hz), ß1 (13-21 Hz), and ß2 (21-30 Hz) bands; their spectral powers are further weighted by NCI and interpolated to 2-dimensional electrode coordinates, producing three main sub-band image sequences. Then, a parallel multi-branch convolutional neural network and gate recurrent unit (PMBCG) is designed to successively extract and identify the spatial-spectral and temporal features from the image sequences. Two public four-class MI-EEG datasets are adopted; the proposed classification method respectively achieves the average accuracies of 98.26% and 80.62% by 10-fold cross-validation experiment; and its statistical performance is also evaluated by multi-indexes, such as Kappa value, confusion matrix, and ROC curve. Extensive experiment results show that NCI-ISG + PMBCG can yield great performance on MI-EEG classification compared to state-of-the-art methods. The proposed NCI-ISG can enhance the feature representation of time-frequency-space domains and match well with PMBCG, which improves the recognition accuracies of MI tasks and demonstrates the preferable reliability and distinguishable ability. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of guided imagery on postoperative pain and comfort in geriatric orthopedics patients. METHODS: This study was carried out with a randomized-controlled true experimental design. The population of the study included geriatric patients receiving treatment at the orthopedics and traumatology inpatient clinic of a university hospital. Based on random selection, the sample consisted of total of 102 patients, including 40 patients in the experimental group and 40 in the control group. The data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Visual Analog Scale, and the General Comfort Questionnaire. RESULTS: After the guided imagery intervention, the pain levels of the experimental group significantly decreased compared to their baseline pain levels (t = 4.002, P = 0.00). Their perceived comfort was also significantly improved (t = -5.428, P = 0.00). Although the perceived comfort of the control group decreased, this decrease was not statistically significant (t = 0.698, P = 0.489). CONCLUSION: It is recommended that guided imagery, which is an inexpensive and accessible method, be integrated into the nursing care process to reduce the pain and increase the comfort of geriatric orthopedics patients.

Guided imagery distracts patients from disturbing feelings and thoughts, positively affects emotional well-being, and reduces pain by producing pleasing mental images. This study aimed to determine the effects of guided imagery on postoperative pain management in patients undergoing lower extremity surgery. This randomized controlled study was conducted between April 2018 and May 2019. This study included 60 patients who underwent lower extremity surgery. After using guided imagery, the posttest mean Visual Analog Scale score of patients in the intervention group was found to be 2.56 (1.00 ± 6.00), whereas the posttest mean score of patients in the control group was 4.10 (3.00 ± 6.00), and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p <.001). Guided imagery reduces short-term postoperative pain after lower extremity surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize research literature, which has investigated the application of motor imagery and action observation in rehabilitation protocols. Specifically, we aimed to review the implementation of motor imagery and action observation in the rehabilitation of lower limb injuries. METHODS: This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension guidelines for scoping reviews checklist. The Medline (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for controlled clinical trials published between 2010 and 2021 using key search terms. Primary articles were screened for inclusion based upon applying motor imagery and action observation as a rehabilitation protocol (independently or in combination) after sustaining an injury or undergoing surgery. Data were charted by extracting the exercise duration, frequency, and the number of weeks from the rehabilitative intervention protocols, and the measured clinical outcomes (pain, range of motion, muscle activity, and functional outcomes). RESULTS: The initial database search resulted in 1367 articles, with 1352 excluded after screening, resulting in a total of 15 articles eligible for inclusion in the review. Six of the included articles included an action observation intervention, eight studies a motor imagery intervention, and a single study included combined motor imagery and action observation approach. The motor imagery and action observation techniques were able to improve clinical outcomes, including daily activity, functional movement, rage of motion, pain, and muscle strength. CONCLUSION: Motor imagery and action observation interventions may be effective to improve rehabilitative outcomes of lower limb injuries, thus its application should be considered alongside standard treatment protocols.

Com o advento da covid-19, foi declarado estado de emergência de saúde pública e decretadas medidas de isolamento e distanciamento social para conter a propagação da doença. O Conselho Federal de Psicologia, considerando a importância do acolhimento seguro durante a pandemia, publicou a Resolução CFP nº 4/2020, permitindo que serviços psicológicos aconteçam de maneira remota. O presente estudo visa, através do Método da Cartografia, apresentar a construção de um setting on-line para intervenções grupais e os desafios na oferta de acolhimento e atendimento remoto. Foram ofertados grupos terapêuticos, por meio da plataforma Google Meet, para estudantes da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Um diário de bordo foi produzido para acompanhar as forças que atravessavam e constituíam o território e a experiência grupal remota. Compreendemos que o território-espaço-grupal-on-line era composto pelo espaço virtual em que nos reuníamos, pelos espaços individuais de cada integrante e pelas forças que os atravessavam. Observamos que nem sempre os participantes dispunham de um lugar privado, mas estiveram presentes no encontro com câmeras e áudios abertos e/ou fechados e/ou através do chat da videochamada. A participação no grupo funcionou como alternativa no momento de distanciamento social, sendo uma possibilidade para o atendimento psicológico em situações de dificuldade de encontros presenciais; entretanto, se mostrou dificultada em diversos momentos, pela falta de equipamentos adequados e instabilidade na internet, fatores que interferiram nas reuniões e impactaram na possibilidade de falar e escutar o que era desejado.(AU)


With the advent of COVID-19, a state of public health was declared, and measures of isolation and social distance to contain the spread of the disease was decreed. The Federal Council of Psychology, considering the importance of safe reception during the pandemic, published CFP Resolution No. 4/2020, allowing psychological services to happen remotely. This study narrates, via the Cartography Method, the experience of inventing an Online Setting for group reception. Therapeutic groups were offered, via Google Meet Platform, to students at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. A logbook was produced to accompany the forces that crossed and constituted the territory and the remote group experience. We understand that the territoryspace-group-online was composed by the virtual-space that we gathered, by the individualspaces of each member and by the forces that crossed them. We observed that the participants did not always have a private place, but they were present at the meeting with open and/or closed cameras and audio and/or through the video call chat. Participation in the group worked as an alternative at the time of social distancing, being a possibility for psychological care in situations of difficulty in face-to-face meetings, however, it proved to be difficult at various times, due to the lack of adequate equipment and instability on the internet, factors that interfered in meetings and impacted the possibility of speaking and listening to what was desired.(AU)


La llegada de la COVID-19 produjo un estado de emergencia de salud pública, en el que se decretaron medidas de confinamiento y distanciamiento físico para contener la propagación de la enfermedad. El Consejo Federal de Psicología, considerando la importancia de la acogida segura durante la pandemia, publicó la Resolución CFP nº 4/2020, por la que se permite la atención psicológica remota. Este estudio tiene por objetivo presentar, mediante el método de la Cartografía, la elaboración de un escenario en línea para la intervención grupal y los desafíos en la oferta de acogida y atención remota. Grupos terapéuticos se ofrecieron, en la plataforma Google Meet, a estudiantes de la Universidad Federal Rural de Río de Janeiro. Se elaboró un diario para acompañar a las fuerzas que atravesaron y constituyeron el territorio y la experiencia remota del grupo. Entendemos que el territorio-espacio-grupo-en línea estaba compuesto por el espacio-virtual que reunimos, por los espacios individuales de cada integrante y por las fuerzas que los atravesaban. Observamos que los participantes no siempre tenían un lugar privado y que estaban presentes en la reunión con cámaras y audio abiertos y/o cerrados y/o por el chat de la videollamada. La participación en el grupo funcionó como una alternativa en el momento del distanciamiento físico y revela ser una posibilidad de atención psicológica en situaciones de dificultad en los encuentros presenciales, sin embargo, se mostró difícil en varios momentos, ya sea por la falta de medios adecuados o por inestabilidad en Internet, factores que interferían en las reuniones e impactaban en la posibilidad de hablar y escuchar lo que se deseaba.(AU)

Studies show that female motor and visuospatial skills are modulated by the menstrual cycle. Implicit motor imagery, meaning the involuntary imagination of movements during a task, involves kinesthetic, visual, and spatial aspects of the corresponding action and can be investigated by using the hand laterality judgment task (HLJT). In this study we aimed to investigate whether implicit motor imagery performance and cortical activity are altered throughout the menstrual cycle, as demonstrated by motor skills in females. Thus, 31 healthy women underwent HLJT during the menstrual, follicular and luteal phases of their menstrual cycles. Right-handed participants had to recognize the laterality (right or left) of hands presented in different views (palm or back) and orientations on a computer screen. Test performance and EEG event-related potentials were analyzed. Participants performed better in the test in the follicular and luteal phases when compared to the menstrual phase, and the accuracy of the test was positively correlated with estradiol levels in the follicular phase. The difference between medial and lateral hand orientations for rotation-related negativity was significant in the medial and left parieto-occipital regions only in the follicular phase. These findings suggest positive modulating action of estradiol in performing implicit motor imagery.

PURPOSE: To test whether Virtual Reality (VR) can benefit cancer patients from their interaction with an immersive environment, on their mood and their biophysical parameters, compared to those who will experience a Guided Imagery (GI) intervention. METHODS: This was a randomized crossover trial with 50 cancer patients on active chemotherapy treatment, who were randomized to one of two treatment sequences VR-GI or GI-VR. Patients were assessed for Mood Changes, using POMS questionnaire, for three symptoms (Nausea, Pain and Feeling Sick), using three questions from FACT-G questionnaire, and Bio-physical parameters (Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Oxygen Saturation). Linear Mixed Effect Models were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS: Patients experienced a better effect of mood state, for all the sub-scales of mood, after the VR intervention compared to GI, regardless of the sequence (p < 0⋅05). No effectiveness was found for Nausea, Pain and Feeling Sick symptoms. Statistically significant improvements were found on the Bio-physical parameters for the VR intervention (p < 0⋅05). CONCLUSION: VR intervention based on mood induction strategies is a feasible and effective procedure for promoting positive mood in cancer patients during chemotherapy. Ways to integrate such innovative technologies in clinical practice need to be explored by health care professionals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02392728.

Deep convolutional networks have been developed to detect prohibited items for automated inspection of X-ray screening systems in the transport security system. To our knowledge, the existing frameworks were developed to recognize threats using only baggage security X-ray scans. Therefore, the detection accuracy in other domains of security X-ray scans, such as cargo X-ray scans, cannot be ensured. We propose an object detection method for efficiently detecting contraband items in both cargo and baggage for X-ray security scans. The proposed network, MFA-net, consists of three plug-and-play modules, including the multiscale dilated convolutional module, fusion feature pyramid network, and auxiliary point detection head. First, the multiscale dilated convolutional module converts the standard convolution of the detector backbone to a conditional convolution by aggregating the features from multiple dilated convolutions using dynamic feature selection to overcome the object-scale variant issue. Second, the fusion feature pyramid network combines the proposed attention and fusion modules to enhance multiscale object recognition and alleviate the object and occlusion problem. Third, the auxiliary point detection head adopts an auxiliary head to predict the new keypoints of the bounding box to emphasize the localizability without requiring further ground-truth information. We tested the performance of the MFA-net on two large-scale X-ray security image datasets from different domains: a Security Inspection X-ray (SIXray) dataset in the baggage domain and our dataset, named CargoX, in the cargo domain. Moreover, MFA-net outperformed state-of-the-art object detectors in both domains. Thus, adopting the proposed modules can further increase the detection capability of the current object detectors on X-ray security images.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of the technique of virtual reality guided imagery in the vital signs of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation patients. METHOD: Quasi-experimental study with 35 participants who received an intervention using virtual reality guided imagery with progressive muscle relaxation, applied three times a week for four weeks in a referral hospital for transplants in the south of Brazil. Data collected included: temperature, arterial pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, pain, and oxygen saturation, before and after each intervention. The comparisons were analyzed using Wilcoxon's test. RESULTS: There was a clinical significance between the mean measurements before and after for respiratory rate (p=0.00) in all stages, and for the variables Heart rate, Temperature, and Oxygen saturation from the 1st to the 12th measurements (p=0.05). CONCLUSION: The intervention was low cost, easy to apply, and showed positive effects, presenting itself as an option for patient-focused care.
